About Coach Dick

Arnie began as a young teacher, only a year out of UBC, in September, 1981. 14-15_Arniecoaching2015Since then he has successfully coached countless teams at the school from soccer to volleyball, but he is best known as the senior boys’ basketball coach. In his letter of application for a position at the school Arnie wrote that “It is my desire to help others in their pursuit of athletic excellence, as well as in their pursuit of spiritual maturity.” Countless young men emerged as graduates from basketball teams at MEI to impact the community of Abbotsford and beyond. One alumnus, Dave Martens, commented that Arnie didn’t just talk about it, his entire life has been devoted to mentoring young men to pursue those twin goals as adults.

Along the way, Arnie’s teams were tremendously successful in the province, something that many others recognized when he was selected as the BC high school boys’ basketball coach of the year in 1995. Long-time rival coach, Rich Goulet, called Arnie one of the toughest coaches to play against. His teams were always well prepared, demonstrated sound fundamentals, and played intense defense.

Come and cheer him on as he coaches his last game on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016. The MEI Sr. Boys basketball team takes on Brookswood (7:00 pm) in the MEI Secondary gym, and there will be an opportunity to connect with old teammates and to honour Coach Dick at the reception to follow (8:45 pm).
