It was great to see so many familiar faces at last night’s (May 11, 2016) MEI Alumni Performing Arts Reunion. Guests enjoyed a fantastic spread of appetizers and desserts by alumnus Irma Giesbrecht, some nostalgic costume displays, photos of spring productions of the past, and most importantly good conversations with friends of historical significance. Our group then headed to the auditorium seating that we all know and love so well and took in the current MEI Secondary spring drama “Les Misérables”.
As a part of the reception, we took a few moments to honour our beloved sewing teacher Deanna Dick, who has been heavily involved in costume prep for spring productions over the years, and who is retiring from teaching this year.
Current student Raquel Schmidt, and alumnus Renae Schmidt affirmed Mrs. Dick’s enduringly kind, patient, and fun teaching style, while MEI Secondary VP Rick Thiessen praised Deanna for the lasting impression that she has made upon students. Mrs. Dick has thrived as a spiritual mentor; a role awarded to her by students throughout the years as they have desired to become more like her in her consistently gracious and humble way. As a school community we have all been blessed by Mrs. Dick’s willingness to serve and to always do the best possible work. You will be missed Mrs. Dick!

Honouring Deanna Dick
As a part of the Alumni Reception, we would like to honour our beloved sewing teacher Deanna Dick, who is retiring from teaching this year. Deanna and her sewing classes have been heavily involved in costume prep over the years, so this is an opportunity to thank her for her work in the lives of MEI students, and for her contributions to Spring productions. » RSVP required for free reception.
Deanna Dick has been involved in costume prep since 1990, beginning by making just one costume for “The Wizard of Oz” as a volunteer. Deanna became staff in 1995, and from 1996-2004 (while Gail Harder was in charge of costume), Deanna helped. She remembers this as a great opportunity to learn, and to “get her feet wet”. From 2004 to present, Deanna has taken the lead of costume design.
